Nobody's Perfect: My Gripes About GW2 Beta Weekend!

First of all, as I look back on this past weekend’s beta event I can honestly say that it was one of the best gaming experiences in my entire life. While no game is perfect, it’s hard for me to find fault in something that has been so fun. But, since I’m suffering from serious GW2 withdrawal (already!) and it’s made me a bit grumpy, I decided to jot down my top five frustrations from this past beta.

Disclaimer: I’m not going to gripe over technical or balancing  issues such as lag, dynamic event scaling, profession balancing or log-in issues. These are not a part of the game design and are being worked on.

#5: No First-Person Camera. When you zoom in you get a really nice view of your back that fills the entire camera. Thousands of players that wanted to take screenshots of the scenery couldn’t do so without their character photobombing the shot. Yes, the character models look amazing, but so does the scenery!

#4: Trading through the Mail. There is no actual ‘trading’ between players, so the in-game mail has to be used. That wouldn’t be quite as inconvenient if there wasn’t a delay in the delivery. It took about 10 minutes for the delivery pigeon to finally deliver the sword my brother was trying to give me.  WTB faster pigeons!

#3: No skills while on top of the water. When you're under the water or on land, combat is amazing.  But when you’re on top of the water, you don’t even  have a skill bar and can only just swim.  I'm sure it would be asking too much to expect BOTH land and water skills but at least one of them would be nice?

#2: Guild Member Limit. Guild member limit was set to 100 and this caused some frustration for some of our larger communities (including the one I belong to!). Perhaps this was explained previously, but many folks didn’t see this one coming.

#1: Death and Waypoints: When your character dies, you have the choice to respawn at a waypoint. The map opens up and you click on the waypoint of your choice. Simple, right? Well, not for unfamiliar players. Many beginners were a bit confused and some struggled to pinpoint a waypoint to click (especially in areas where they had uncovered very few of them). An option to “respawn at nearest city” or something to that effect would be very helpful.

Well, that’s my list. I actually strugged to find five gripes that were worth mentioning! Overall, I’m very sad that the weekend is over and now I have to try to find a game that will keep me remotely interested until the next BWE. Time to log into GW1 and get those last 10 HoM points!

GW2 BWE #1 Countdown: 2

Oh, clients are downloading ... gamers are getting *cough cough* sick and preparing their 'call in to work' voices.

How To Install the Guild Wars 2 Beta Client

I've seen several tweets from folks that have struggled installing the Guild Wars 2 beta client.  Since there is no "installer" the game must be manually downloaded and copied to a folder on your computer.  The official step-by-step instructions are as follows:

In order to participate in the beta, you will need to download and fully update the game client, as detailed in the steps below. We recommend that you begin downloading the client as soon as possible so you are ready for the upcoming event beginning this Friday at noon PDT (GMT -7).
During this beta there is no installer, so use these directions to manually download and copy Guild Wars 2 to a folder on your hard drive.
1. Download the Guild Wars 2 executable file. If prompted, be sure to click “Save” or "Save As,” not “Run”.
2. Copy the executable file from the location where you downloaded it, typically your Downloads folder, to the folder on your computer where you wish to install the game. The folder where you place the executable file is the folder the game will use to download and store its data. Note: If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, it is recommended that you install the game in a location other than the Program Files folder. Alternatively, you should run the game as an administrator.
3. Run the executable file from its final location.
4. Allow the game to patch the necessary data from our file servers.
5. Enjoy!
I hope this helps!

The MMORPG: You've Come a Long Way Baby!

GW2 BWE #1 Countdown!: 3

If you already have the client on your PC, it's updating to the beta client! If you don't already have the client (from previous beta invites) I don't recommend snooping on the interwebs for one since there are far too many scams out there to find a trusted link.  I would guess that pre-purchasers will see an email about it as early as today.

UPDATE: Live Stream Page Added

If you notice, you'll see a new tab called "Live Stream".  Stay tuned for plenty of Guild Wars 2 beta live-streaming.  To those of you that check out my stream I have one question: 'Y U NO PLAYING?  I kid, I kid.

Just yesterday I was talking to a co-worker and said that I wasn't sure why I wanted to stream since most of the folks would be playing.  An hour or so later I thought, "I hope there are some good streams that I can watch on my phone when I'm at work."  /derp

I don't have a stream schedule figured out yet, since I will likely be doing streaming for GWI during the weekend as well.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Stupid Saturday: Pretty SMRT

I thought the GW2 beta didn't have /dance?!?!

BIG NOOZ: Diablo III Open Beta This Weekend

With the 'accidental' open beta behind us, I didn't see this coming.  Last night (after I went to bed, of course) Blizzard announced that Diablo III would enter open beta starting today at 3PM EST through Monday 3PM EST.

I won't be doing any streaming since I've never played a Diablo game before and don't want to embarrass myself any more than I usually do.  I do plan to Fraps plenty of gameplay and share my thoughts about anything I don't see being talked about or if I feel I can bring a unique angle to the community.

To learn more, here is Blizzard's announcement page that will get you all the info you'll need to download and play this weekend.

BIG NOOZ: Follow GW2's Facebook, Get New Artwork!

ArenaNet's upcoming MMORPG Guild Wars 2 is generating quite a following.  Their Facebook page is finally catching up. I made a short video to talk about some of the cool stuff that Anet has in store on their Facebook page.

Ascalon (Lyrics and Chords)

I'd like to say a quick 'Thank you!" for all of the encouraging words about my song "Ascalon".

Here are the lyrics/chords:

(CAPO 6th Fret)
v1
Am7
Gazing on the river
Fmaj7
That flows beyond the wall
Am7
In the shadow of the towers
Fmaj7 Esus E
Built to never fall
Fmaj7            G
Have you ever wondered
Em7                  Am
If we truly belong here?
Fmaj7       G
What if we discover
Esus                   E
It's all about to disappear

Cho:
              Am7      Am7/G
When the fire falls
   Fmaj7
As we stand beneath crumbled walls
       Am7                  Am7/G
Will we keep on fighting
    Fmaj7             Esus  E
Or realize that we never belonged
          Am7   G      Fmaj7
As the battle rages on
Em7           F             G               Am7
We will look fondly on memories of Ascalon

v2.
We're fighting for homeland
With two conflicting dreams
I can hear the raging thunder
I can hear the children scream
Driven off to Kryta
Into a strangers land
We say goodbye to all we ever knew
and all we've ever had

(Cho.)

bridge
Am7                    G
A kingdom built on kingdom
Fmaj7
Home built on home
   Am7                        Am7/G
Our blood is spilled throughout this war
F                                   Esus    E
And our ghosts will haunt forevermore
